As time goes on, it is becoming increasingly more important to have a good credit history and score. The world is becoming progressively more dependant on credit for goods and services and to obtain the best terms and rates from lenders a good credit score is required.

Not only does a person’s credit score relate to the ability to obtain important lifestyle necessities such as a car or mortgage, credit history can also determine whether or not a person gets a good deal on a mobile phone or even a job.

For these reasons and many more, keeping a good credit history and therefore credit score is vital. A person with a good history of credit payments can easily find that there credit score diminishes through a simple late payment or using maximum credit available. Maybe financial difficulties have arisen through redundancy or illness. Whatever the reason for a drop in credit score, it is important to realise that this can be ‘fixed’ or ‘cleaned up’.

The first step to cleaning up a credit score is to find out exactly what entries are on a particular person’s credit file. This can easily be found out on the Internet where instant access is granted via one of the main credit bureaus websites, for example, Experian, Trans Union or Equifax. A simple search engine query will result in finding a credit bureau and they offer a free credit report showing all credit entries for that person.

If there are any old and irrelevant entries, such as a loan that has now been paid off still showing as outstanding, a request can be made to the bureau to have it removed. This is known as cleaning up a credit score and is likely to help improve an overall rating. It is also possible, through fraudulent activities that another person’s data is mixed with someone else’s. These would have been used to open bogus accounts and if such entries exist they need to be removed from the credit history as are likely having a negative effect on the overall credit score.

Should the credit history be lower than required due to past financial problems, the credit score may be moderately quickly repaired or cleaned by utilising good credit practices in the future. By this it means that credit used is kept at 30% lower than the available credit or repayments are made on time and in full for example.
